Selon Reuters, le Florenceois de 34 ans connu sous ses initiales F.F. et propriétaire de Bitgrail, une société de cryptographie qui a été déclarée en faillite en 2019, est soupçonné d’avoir simulé une cyber-attaque qui a escroqué plus de 230 000 personnes et qui a tenu une nano pièce, une cryptographie lancée en 2015.

La série de faux piratages aurait causé des pertes de 120 millions d’euros (146 millions de dollars), et l’individu est accusé de fraude informatique, de faillite frauduleuse et de Crypto Bank blanchiment d’argent. Dans une déclaration, les autorités italiennes ont déclaré qu’une telle affaire pouvait être classée comme „la plus grande attaque cyberfinancière en Italie et l’une des plus importantes au monde“.

Le rapport précise que F.F. lui-même a contacté la police en février 2018 pour signaler le piratage et la perte d’une „énorme“ quantité de nano-pièces, mais Ivano Gabrielli, directeur du centre national pour les cyber-crimes (CNAIPIC), a commencé à soupçonner que l’homme de 34 ans était impliqué.

Pour la première fois en Italie et en Europe, nous avons documenté des comportements frauduleux et rapaces au détriment d’investisseurs effectués entièrement sur des plateformes informatiques et via l’utilisation de monnaies virtuelles.

F.F. a-t-il participé activement aux piratages ?

Toutefois, M. Gabrielli a déclaré qu’il n’était pas encore clair si F.F. avait participé activement au vol „ou s’il avait simplement décidé de ne pas renforcer les mesures de sécurité après l’avoir découvert“, car la police pensait qu’il aurait été facile de prévenir le vol dans un premier temps.

Le 21 janvier 2019, F.F. a été condamné par le tribunal italien des faillites à restituer le plus d’actifs possible à ses clients. Les autorités italiennes ont également réussi à saisir plus d’un million de dollars d’actifs personnels, dont sa voiture.

However, Reuters said the hackers monitored NTIA staff e-mails that ran on Microsoft’s Office 365 „for months. Other government agencies may also have been violated, but the sources have not provided additional details.

In response to the attack on such a powerful government agency, cryptomaniac players pointed to the advantages of Bitcoin (BTC).

„Bitcoin is never hacked,“ said Dan Held, head of Kraken business, on Twitter. The bull Bitcoin Anthony „Pomp“ Pompliano echoed Held’s sentiment, saying „Bitcoin has never been hacked“.

The Blockfolio aimed at NTIA’s cyber security, which implies that the agency used outdated algorithms for its cryptographic security:

It is not clear if any money was compromised as a result of the breach. At the time of publication, the hack appeared to be limited to potentially stolen information from government agency e-mails.
